Study in China this fall with CLC

Learn about the College of Lake County's Fall Semester study abroad trip to Xi'an, China, at one of four information sessions at the Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St.

The one-hour sessions will take place at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 23 in Room T130; 5:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in Room A133; 12:30 p.m. March 8 in Room D201; and 5:30 p.m. March 8 in Room T345. The deadline to apply for the trips is April 14.

In CLC's seventh semester abroad in China, participants will study at Xi'an International University, taking courses in English from XAIU and CLC faculty in various disciplines. Students live in an international dorm and are accompanied by a CLC faculty member.

CLC's relationship with Xi'an International University began in 2007 when the college established a semester-abroad program with funding from the U.S. Department of Education. Since then, six groups of CLC students have spent a semester at the university.

Jessica Carrasco of Mundelein spent Fall Semester 2016 in Xi'an.

"It was an eye-opening experience, learning Chinese culture and language firsthand and making friends with those from China and from other countries," Carrasco said.

"Spending a semester abroad shows a potential employer that you can move beyond your comfort zone. China is important because the U.S. does a lot of trading with them. I already speak English and Spanish, and knowing how to speak and write Chinese will help me be more employable.

"It's really great for CLC to have a relationship with Xi'an International University, and I highly recommend students participate in the semester abroad program," she said.

In 2012, CLC won a U.S. State Department grant that established an American Culture Center at XAIU. CLC was one of 19 higher education institutions chosen to establish a cultural center, the only community college selected for the honor.

The estimated cost is $5,600, plus food ($500-$700) and includes tuition for 12-13 transferable credits, international airfare, in-country travel, cultural excursions, shared lodging and travel insurance.

Scholarships are available to qualified current CLC students. For details and an application, visit www.clcillinois.edu/semesterabroad. Scholarship applications are due April 28.
