Advocate Sherman nurse accepts DAISY Foundation Award

Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin honored Alex Santoro this past Wednesday, Dec. 28, with the DAISY Foundation's Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Alex was chosen out of 70-plus nominations for going above and beyond her job as a registered nurse in the hospital's orthopedic and neurology department.

The nomination highlighted how there had been a patient in need of surgery, but was frightened as he would have no friends or family to support him through this procedure. Upon hearing this news, Alex spent her day off sitting with this patient while he went through his surgery and recovery.

"Alex demonstrates compassionate relationship-based care to every patient, every day," commented her manager, Amanda Wigder, RN at Advocate Sherman Hospital, "Like many nurses, Alex believes that she is just doing her job, when in reality, it means so much more to her patients."

Sherman is a participating organization of the DAISY Foundation, which was created in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of complications of an auto-immune disease. Patrick received extraordinary care from his nurses, and his family felt compelled to express their profound gratitude for the compassion and skill nurses bring to patients and families every day. The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses celebrates nurses in over 2,200 healthcare facilities in all 50 states and in 14 other countries around the world.

Sherman hospital holds an award ceremony twice a year, honoring one nurse from the multiple nominations.

"This DAISY Award recognition is reviewed by patient and family, as well as by peers," commented Cheri Goll, chief nurse executive at Advocate Sherman Hospital," So the recipient can be assured that they are being honored for great clinical skill and leadership, but most especially for their strong patient care and compassion."

Wigder further shared, "Alex has been a wonderful addition to our orthopedic/neurology team and I couldn't be any more proud of her winning the DAISY Foundation award."
