Advocate Sherman to offer free Empowered Pregnancy class

Advocate Sherman Hospital is in its first year of the new Empowered Pregnancy program for expecting mothers desiring to give birth at the Elgin hospital.

There are three sessions available to mothers, one for each trimester, with the next session from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27.

This program seeks to empower women with the knowledge, relationships and experiences to make their pregnancy all they want and need it to be.

"We have already made great relationships and connections to the various expecting mothers who have attended so far," commented Luisa Velazquez, coordinator of patient care in the Family Birthing Center, "We hope to continue to grow and empower them with healthy tools to advocate for themselves and their babies."

Each session that will consist of a meet and greet for moms to mingle and celebrate being pregnant. During this time they will learn techniques and benefits of relaxation for themselves and their baby, such as art and music therapy, nutrition, and the benefits of prenatal and postnatal massage.

Expecting mothers are encouraged to enroll in this free program during their second trimester, but one may join at any point during their pregnancy.
