CLC presents three STEM Speaker Series events

Anyone interested in science and technology can come to the College of Lake County's STEM Speaker Series, where content experts will provide a fresh perspective on important STEM-related subjects. "STEM" stands for "Science, Technology, Engineering and Math."

The series provides an opportunity for teachers and students of all ages to learn more about potential careers in STEM fields. Spring Semester STEM Speaker Series events include the following:

• March 8: Before the Clinic: Basic Research to Identify New Molecular Targets of Heart Disease, 6:30 p.m., C Wing Auditorium, Room C005. Every year about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack; 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year, one in every four deaths. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.

Learn about laboratory research taking place in Chicago that is aimed at identifying and targeting molecules of the immune system that may help during recovery from a heart attack. The speaker is Edward B. Thorp, Ph.D., FAHA.

Dr. Thorp is a professor of pathology at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, Department of Pathology and Feinberg Cardiovascular Research Institute. In 2015, Thorp was an invited young faculty speaker at the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences. In 2014 he was recognized as official fellow of American Heart Association, and in 2010 and 2012 he was recognized for best oral presentations at the Cardiovascular Research Institute Symposium at Columbia University.

• April 7: NanoNight-Nanotechnology Family Festival, 6-8 p.m., CLC Southlake Campus, 1120 S. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills. Bring your family to CLC's third festival and experience nanoscale science and engineering applications with hands-on activities. Explore the impact of nanoscale science on the technology of today and potential for future innovation.

• May 3: Robotics Festival, 6:30-9 p.m., Physical Education Center (Building 7). An evening of hands-on activities and exhibits. Discover robotics projects you can build at home, try out some of CLC's labs and explore career pathways. Local robotics teams will showcase their projects.
