Chaparral Fitness Grand Opening April 26

College of DuPage will hold the grand opening of Chaparral Fitness from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 26, at the Physical Education Center at College of DuPage.

Community members can take tours of the new 11,000 square-foot fitness center and try the state-of-the-art equipment. Chaparral Fitness also offers an eight-lane, 25-yard lap pool with a built-in ADA ramp; drop-in fitness classes, from yoga to spinning; and personal and group fitness training.

Matt Cousins, Manager of Chaparral Fitness, said the new facility was a priority during the recent 18-month renovation of the Physical Education Center.

The facility, formerly known as the Community Fitness Lab, was previously located in a 2,500 square-foot area that tucked away on the first floor. Now the upper level of the P.E. Center, which previously was the lobby, has been transformed into a fitness area more than four times the size of its predecessor.

"This lobby space just wasn't being utilized to its fullest potential," Cousins said. "The construction of a new entrance to the P.E. Center meant this space could be used for something else. The amount of natural light alone makes this an inviting environment."

Chaparral Fitness includes more than 75 pieces of cardio equipment and 15 52-inch HD televisions. Members have access to drop-in classes such as spinning, yoga, TRX, boot camp and boxing. In addition, Cousins said the completely refurbished locker rooms are "first class."

Membership is $33 a month/$396 annually for community members and $24 a month/$288 annually for seniors. The first 100 paid members during the open house will receive a free T-shirt.

In addition to Chaparral Fitness, the P.E. Center now includes a new varsity athletics wing with locker rooms, a training room and strength lab specifically for the athletes; group fitness labs that were once the racquetball courts; and a renovated pool with a state-of-the-art filtration system.

Cousins said Chaparral Fitness will be open 110 hours per week, and all constituencies - from students to the community - will have access to it.

"The Physical Education Center renovation helped us utilize space in the most efficient way possible, and everyone is benefitting," he said. "Chaparral

Fitness is going to surprise people. We have yet to have someone walk through door and not say 'Wow!'"
