College of DuPage to Host 7th Annual Veteran's Day Read-In and Additional Free Veterans Day Activities Nov. 11

In recognition of Veteran's Day, COD will host its 7th Annual Veteran's Day Read-In and additional free activities to celebrate and honor U.S. veterans on Monday, Nov. 11.

These events, sponsored by the College of DuPage Veteran's Association, will take place throughout the day. Please click here for a complete list of activities.

In addition to a flag raising, art display and movie screenings, the 7th Annual Veterans Day Read-In will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Services Center, Room 2200 (Board Room). The program will feature will feature readings from war and military literature. Participants are encouraged to select favorite text from war and military literature, such as poems, excerpts from a short stories, essays, memoirs, public or private letters, or to share a personal story, memory or show pictures to honor a veteran they know. Presentations should be five to ten minutes and should include an introduction of the author or veteran, and a reading or viewing of the selection.

College of DuPage's Veterans Services provides financial aid assistance, the VA work study program, a dedicated student veteran's lounge, referrals for specialized veterans counseling, as well as additional social and educational programs. The College also host job fairs and workshops to help veterans who are seeking employment.

In 2012, College of DuPage became the first community college to receive the Governor's Award for Excellence in Education by the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs. In addition, the College has maintained its status as a "Military Friendly School" by G.I. Jobs, the premier publication for military personnel transitioning into civilian life. The 2013 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are cited with doing the most embrace America's military service members, veterans and spouses.
