Meyer meets Myers' challenge for Buffalo Grove

After six holes on Thursday, Buffalo Grove coach Matt Myers challenged Bison senior golfer Courtney Meyer.

“She was frustrated because her second shots weren't what she wanted,” Myers said.

Sure enough, Meyer got what she wanted with her approach shots on the final three holes, closing out with a par, par and birdie on the front nine at the Buffalo Grove Golf Course.

Meyer's strong finish allowed her to earn medalist honors and tie her season-low score of 40 as the Bison won on their senior night 171-258 over visiting Schaumburg.

“She (Meyer) was great off the tee all day,” Myers said of the senior who has also been a sharp-shooting guard for the varsity basketball team the past two years.

Meyer finished great on the green, too, sinking a 15-foot putt to birdie the par 5 No. 9 hole.”

“Courtney is the epitome of what we want at Buffalo Grove in terms of a multi-sport athletes who succeed,” Myers said.

Myers' golfers (3-2 in the MSL) have been succeeding quite well this season.

They are only 4 strokes away from an undefeated season, falling by 3 to Fremd and 1 to Barrington.

“We feel like our team is really strong,” said Bison senior Amber Guiao, who carded a 45 on Thursday. “We are each making improvement for the season and we're excited to see how it goes.”

Guiao's sister Lauren, a freshman, recorded the Bison's second-best score with a 42 while senior Kelli Zickert posted a 44.

Amber is enjoying playing with her sister this season.

“It's the only year for us together and it's real exciting,” said Amber, who was paired in the same foursome with her sister in the meet against Fremd. “It was always something I was looking forward to since we started playing at the same age. I was 13 and she was 10.”

So does big sister give little sister advice on her game?

“I leave that to the coach,” Amber said with a laugh. “I give nothing but moral support.”

Myers said the Bison are just looking to give their best the rest of the season.

“This is a good time to be playing well with the second half of the regular season coming up and then the conference meet,” he said. “Like any team, there are strokes still to be cut and improvements to be made.”

Lindsay Leiber, who has been recording Schaumburg's top scores, did not compete Thursday because she was on a college visit. Christina Kim's 58 led the Saxons.

Prospect d. Hersey: Prospect senior Ally Scaccia made 7 pars and 2 birdies for a 2-under-par 34 at the Rob Roy Golf Course as the visiting Knights prevailed in the MSL match 148-177 in Mt Prospect.

Kacie O'Donnell (3 birdies) followed with a 37. Kiley Walsh (38), Noreeen Caporusso (39) and Bridget Brassil (39) rounded out the Knights' score card.

Alysia Zaucha (42 with 1 birdie), Claire Schwaba (43), Megan Kopeny (44), Lindsay Perkins (48) and Lexi Heidkamp (48) led Hersey.

Barrington d. Wheeling: Barrington won the MSL meet with a score of 179 led by Shivani Majmudar (40). Reena Sulkar (40) Ashley Mallon (46) and Elsa George (53).

Fremd d Lake Forest: Seniors Dorothy Feng and Jennifer Kim tied for medalist honors by shooting 2-over-par 38s for the Vikings who won the nonconference dual meet at Palatine Hills Golf Course 157-185.

Haezi Jung (40) and Kelly O'Sullivan (41) completed the Vikes' score card.
