Barton, BG seniors enjoy big day

It was senior day for Buffalo Grove’s softball team on Wednesday.

Senior third baseman Erin Barton couldn’t have begun the celebration of her own day any better.

Barton belted a 3-run homer in the first inning and that proved plenty for sophomore ace Julia Camardo, who went on to shut out visiting Wheeling 5-0.

Camardo (11-6) tossed a 1-hitter for the Bison (12-7) who improved to 8-4 in the Mid-Suburban East, two games in front of Elk Grove (7-7).

Wheeling ace pitcher Katie Quagliano’s double was the only hit off Camardo.

Barton celebrated senior day along with classmates Amanda Salzman, Tessa Poulsen, Kristina Dakas and Megan Fu.

Fremd 6, Conant 3: Visiting Fremd (17-6, 12-1) remained 1½ games behind Barrington in the MSL West as senior ace Ashlynne Schwantz (16-3) struck out four and walked two for the win.

Senior first baseman Michelle Mazur (2-for-3) belted 2 doubles for 2 RBI to lead the Vikes’ offense, which also had a double from Leigh Farina and base hits from Morgan Brauer, Tracy Welninski, Julie Josten and Kristine Herdegen.

Conant (11-8, 6-6) was led on offense by Sarah Thompson (2-for-4, double, RBI), Telly Hunter (2-for-2, double) and Hailey Rothstein (2-for-2, double, RBI).

Sara Neumann struck out five for Conant.

Elk Grove 12, Hersey 0 (5 inn): Becca Maher (4-for-4, double), Aleece Duffy (3-for-4, double), Elisa Payne (2-for-3), Megan Eul (2-for-2) and Abbey Sloan (2-for-3, double) led the offense for Elk Grove (19-10, 7-7) which also received a double from Shannon Taucher.

Eul (9-4) also posted the win while junior Alysia Zaucha led the offense for Hersey (5-13, 3-9) by going 2-for-3 with a double.

Palatine 4, Hoffman Estates 1: North Dakota recruit Megan Hedstrom had an RBI double in the first inning while Tori Walzak and Nora Walsh had RBI singles in the second as visiting Palatine improved to 14-10 and 9-4. Shannon Surell went 2-for-3 for the Pirates.

Dom Boisvert pitched the first 3 innings to earn the win while Hedstrom went the final four.

Jordyn Fera and Nicole LaBeck doubled for Hoffman (3-18, 3-10), which received 3 strikeouts from freshman Tracy Osimowicz, who walked only one and gave up 2 earned runs.

“Tracy did a great job,” said Hawks coach Lindsey Hamma. “We just didn’t back her up well enough with offense.”

Prospect 6 Rolling Meadows 5: Prospect (7-16, 5-8) won its third game in a row as sophomore Casey Lenski improved to 3-0. Rachel Trebswether’s two-out single scored Meghan Doyle to give host Prospect a 1-0 lead.

Meadows answered with 3 runs in the third, getting a two-out, 2-run single by Hannah Whidden and RBI groundout by Grace Skorin.

Prospect scored 3 runs in the bottom of the inning. Maggie Pancini (2-for-4) and Michele Molini (2-for-4) doubled and Lenski (2-for-4) singled them home. Meghan Doyle singled home Ally Schuldt (2-for-4) to give Prospect a 4-3 lead.

Prospect took a 5-3 lead when Molini singled and scored on an infield error.

Pancini’s RBI single in the fifth made it 6-3 before the Mustangs’ Sam Anderson led off the seventh with a solo homer to center field.

Jenny Watson’s single with two outs kept Meadows’ hopes alive.

Lenski retired the next two batters before Winkler singled to short left field. The game ended when left fielder Schuldt came up firing and threw home to Cassie Poulos who then made a diving tag to get the runner out at home.

“This was really a great game, lots of excitement and lots of scoring,” said Prospect coach Jim Adair “We continue to play well and my team is very excited about the upcoming playoffs.”

Antioch 3, St. Viator 2: Sam Hogan and Michelle Presslak had the RBI for the host Lions (6-21) in the nonconference game.

Christian Liberty splits: The Chargers (6-10, 3-5) lost the opener 11-10 and won 6-2 in Game 2 of the Northeastern Athletic Conference twin bill.

Multiple hitters for the Chargers in Game 1 were Jenn West (3-for-4, 1 run, 1 RBI), Jess Moriarty (3-for-4, RBI, 2 runs), Beth Cunningham (2-for-4, RBI, 1 run) and Darby Calkins (2-for-4, RBI, 1 run).

Megan Sullivan earned the win in Game 2 as teammate Jenna Pavlik went 2-for-3.
