St. Edward opens with split
St. Edward opened its softball season at the Elgin Sports Complex Saturday, and Green Wave coach Jaci Corn came away more than happy with a nonconference split with Sycamore.
Freshman Lindsey Zdroik fired a 1-hitter in a 2-1 Game 1 win, striking out nine and walking none. Sycamore came back to win the second game 7-5 by scoring 5 runs in the sixth inning. Zdroik pitched all 14 innings in her Green Wave debut.
“We are really pleased with our first day out,” said Corn. “Lindsay is a workhorse and she gives it everything she’s got. We hit the ball and played as a team.”
The Green Wave won Game 1 in the bottom of the seventh inning when NIU recruit Kali Kossakowski doubled, went to third on Ashley Gradisher’s single an scored on a grounder by Zdroik.
Kossaskowski was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the win.
In Game 2, St, Edward led 4-1 going into the sixth inning but allowed Sycamore 4 unearned runs. The Wave made 10 errors on the day.
Kossakowski had a home run in Game 2 and Kristi Kroll added a double. Ryann Scully was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Allison Stratman had an RBI.
“Our defense will get more work now that we’re finally playing games,” Corn said.
St. Edward, on spring break next week, will take to the indoor climate for three games at The Dome at The Ballpark in Rosemont. The Wave will play Freeport Monday at 9 a.m., Regina Dominican Wednesday at 11 a.m. and Chicago Longwood Friday at 3 p.m.
Burlington Central splits: Playing in downstate Tremont, the Rockets got a 1-hitter from freshman Emily Kisch to beat Bloomington Central Catholic 4-1, but then managed just 1 hit in a 2-0 loss to Tremont.
Kisch struck out eight and walked six in the win over Bloomington CC. Bekah Harnish was 2-for-4 for the Rockets and Brooke Gaylord went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Lauren King also drove in a run. Against Tremont, Harnish’s single in the first inning was BC’s only hit. Gaylord suffered the loss, striking out fivem walking two and only allowing 2 hits and 1 earned run.
“We got two more games in,” said BC coach Wade Maisto, whose 3-1 team is scheduled to play Elgin Monday at Rocket Hill before heading into Big Northern East play Tuesday at Marengo, the defending conference champ and Class 3A state runner-up last year.
“Tremont is a very good 2A team. They had a nice crowd and they were pumped and ready for us. We were a little mentally flat today but four games in I can’t complain.”
Jacobs 7, Hoffman Estates 3: Alyssa Lach and Nicky Chapa had doubles and Jacquelyn Hengler a triple as Jacobs downed Hoffman Estates. Kelsey Peters was the winning pitcher.
Antioch 6, Jacobs 4: Jacquelyn Hengler was 3-for-4 with a double and Alyssa Lach went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI for the Golden Eagles in this loss. Emily Borg took the loss in the circle for Jacobs (2-1).
Friday’s games: The Streamwood softball team opened its season Friday, losing a doubleheader to DeKalb 5-3 and 10-1. Kylee Jambor (RBI) and Melissa Malcolm had triples for the Sabres in Game 1. Jessica Daley was the losing pitcher. In Game 2, Holly Foret had a double and a triple for Streamwood and Brittany Delao drove in the Sabres’ only run. Kaitlyn Hedger took the loss.
