Girls golf/Scouting the ESCC tournament

When: 8 a.m. today

Where: Village Greens Golf Course, Woodridge.

Outlook: Can the Lions notch their third ESCC crown in four years? To do it, they would need to avenge their only league loss to Marian Catholic, which went 10-0 in dual meets and beat the Lions by 5 strokes at the Old Orchard Golf Course. Benet and Nazareth were third and fourth in that quad. Viator won the ESCC in 2008 and 2009 and was third last year behind Benet and Marian. Lions No. 1 player Dana Gattone, a sophomore who shot a 37 to earn medalist honors in the dual meet with Marian, was the league co-champion with Marian’s Bree Veasey last year. Her best 18 holes this season is a 73 at the St. Viator Invite held at the Deerfield Golf Club. Viator’s No. 2 player is junior Amy Stringfellow, whose season-best is an 82 at the Rockford Invite. No. 3 is Molly O’Keeffe, whose top score is an 84 at the St. Viator Invite. “Molly has done a great job of being a team leader,” said Lions coach Mick Drewes. “She works so hard as the team’s only senior. Her game has just become more consistent and her swing is very solid. Molly really shows all our girls how to prepare and I’m very proud of her.” No. 4 is Haley Gainer, whose best round is an 84. Filling out the Lions’ roster are sophomores Chrissy Wimberly and Courtney Christophe. “Courtney has really cut down her scores,” Drews said. “Her best round this summer was a 108 but she started breaking the 100s and now is on the verge of the 90s. She is the most improved girl on our team.”
