Prospect’s Hamann wins No. 100

Four area girls golfers who were among the top 35 in the state last season competed in Mt. Prospect on Wednesday.

Three were in a dual meet at the Mt. Prospect Golf Course, while St. Viator’s Dana Gattone was part of a four-team East Suburban Catholic meet at Old Orchard.

At Mt. Prospect, last year’s seventh-place finisher Grace Kil of Buffalo Grove finished tie for medalist honors with host Prospect’s Christine Garmoe.

The Knights won the meet 160-189, giving Jim Hamann his 100th meet win in seven years as the Knights’ coach.

“I credit all 100 of them to my former and current players,” Hamann said. “I am not the one hitting the shots in the events or at practice. I am proud of these kids. It’s their team.”

Prospect’s senior Allison Walsh, who was in a tie for 34th with Gattone and Garmoe in last year’s Class AA state meet, and her sister Kiley each shot 40s while Sarah Scaccia contributed a 41 to the Knights card.

Garmoe birdied No. 5 on the front nine and recorded a superb two-putt for par after driving to the lower deck of the seventh green with the pin on the top.

Allison Walsh finished with back-to-back pars and had a birdie on No. 6 while Kiley parred holes 6, 7 and 8.

“I am very pleased with the way we are hitting the ball,” said Hamann whose team improved to 9-0 in the Mid-Suburban League. “Sarah Scaccia’s short game is starting to heat up. I am very proud of all 25 of our kids’ effort. The kids know what we need to do to get ready for the postseason.”

Kil finished with 2 birdies, 3 pars, 2 bogeys, and 2 double bogeys.

“After three days in a row of matches, Grace definitely had her struggles today but was able to hit enough quality shots to be able to post a nice score,” said BG coach Matt Myers, whose team one day earlier featured a hole-in-one against Rolling Meadows by senior Becca Winter on the fourth hole (164 yards) at the Buffalo Grove Golf Course.

“Grace and the rest of our team played with some of the best competition that our area has to offer in those girls at Prospect and she fared very well,” Myers added. “Hopefully she and the rest of our team can continue to play well these next few weeks heading into the postseason.”

At Old Orchard, St. Viator (186) was second behind Marian Catholic (181).

After Gattone’s 39, senior captain Molly O’Keeffe put in the next best score for the Lions (47).

Barrington 176, Schaumburg 212: Heather Ciskowski (39), Samantha Carman (42), Lindsey Martindale (46) and Kelly Umphred (49) led Barrington to the victory at the Schaumburg Golf Course. Emily Santucci (47) paced the Saxons.
