Alternative instruction continues at College of DuPage through spring semester

Prioritizing the safety and health of students, online and alternative instruction will continue through the end of spring semester at College of DuPage.

COD's spring semester offers more than 3,400 courses in a range of class formats, including virtual class meetings, online instruction and hybrid.

Priority registration for returning students with 30 or more completed credit hours opens Thursday, Nov. 5.

Registration for new and returning students with any number of completed COD credit hours opens Thursday, Nov. 12. Similar to the fall term, the online course internet fee of $57.50 will be waived for all students.

Spring semester begins Monday, Jan. 25, and includes 16-, 12- and two 8-week sessions.

“Faculty, staff and administrators have worked hard to provide students with the best learning environment possible in the COVID-19 pandemic,” said College of DuPage President Dr. Brian Caputo. “While many students will continue to complete coursework at home, COD will support students in their academic endeavors without interruption.”

Students in hybrid courses visit the campus for labs, studios or clinical work, with additional required learning online. Eight new courses in Computer Information Systems and Computer Information Technology will be offered in a hybrid format during the spring semester.

Online courses, meanwhile, are internet-based, conducted off-campus and adhere to instructor timelines and designated learning outcomes. Students interact with each other primarily through discussion boards and written messages.

Designed to allow students face-to-face contact in a virtual format while adhering to social distancing measures, virtual class meetings take place completely online in real time on specified days and times using video chat software.

New students can connect with the Admissions and Outreach Department via chat or virtual appointments and continuing students can connect with the Counseling, Advising and Transfer Services Department using the online program Advise or via Zoom. For students seeking financial aid, representatives are available via phone or email.

“This spring, besides adding more courses to our hybrid offerings, we have significantly increased the number of laptop loaners for students. We have also provided more hot pots on campus and purchased a number of individual hot spots that students can use up to a year,” said COD Provost Mark Curtis Chavez.
