Advocate Condell offers free flu shots, lectures, cooking class

Advocate Condell Medical Center is offering a range of health services, lectures and classes this month to educate community members on heart issues, and keep residents healthy all winter long.

Programs and services include:

• “Free Flu Shots for Food” will be offered on Saturday, Nov. 10, and Sunday, Nov. 11, at all three of Advocate Condell’s Immediate Care Centers. Every person 18 years and older who brings a non-perishable food item will receive a free shot --- a $25 value. Food items will be donated to local food pantries before Thanksgiving. Shots will be available from 8 am-8 pm at the Vernon Hills Immediate Care Center, 6 Phillips Road; from 8 am-10 pm at the Round Lake Beach Immediate Care Center, 2 E. Rollins Road; and from 7 am-11 pm at the Gurnee Immediate Care Center, 1445 Hunt Club Road. Shots available while supplies last.

• “Don’t Skip a Beat: Living with Atrial Fibrillation” will be presented on Monday, Nov. 12, at the hospital’s Gurnee Centre Club, 1405 Hunt Club Road. Many people live with A-Fib --- the most common type of irregular heartbeat. A-Fib is a serious condition that can dramatically increase stroke risk, but it’s sometimes difficult to diagnose. Mehran Jabbarzadeh, MD, Board Certified in Cardiac Electrophysiology, will outline symptoms of A-Fib and give tips on talking to your doctor about concerns. He’ll also review the latest treatments, and answer questions from the audience. The lecture takes place at 6:30 pm. The program is free, but registration is required. Call 800-323-8622 and request class 5C41.

• “Table Time with Family and Friends.” Chef Ryan Hutmacher, CEO and Founder of Centered Chef, will teach participants how to create an honest-to-goodness family-style meal, with a focus on wholesome ingredients. “With the help of your family and friends on Thanksgiving, you'll have the nutritional "know how" and tools to prepare a more mindful meal, while still enjoying your guests,” Hutmacher said. The program includes a registered dietitian to answer questions while Chef Ryan prepares mouth-watering samples. The program will take place at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Condell Conference Center, 801 S. Milwaukee Ave. in Libertyville. The cost is $15 per person, and space is limited. Register by calling 800-323-8622 and requesting class SEPTABLE5.

• “10,000 Steps to Better Health.” Sunday, Nov. 18, at 2 pm at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 1155 Hillside Ave. in Antioch. Learn how taking more steps can improve your heart health. Presented by Mary Ann Majewski, the lead nurse in Advocate Condell’s Cardiac Rehab unit. The program is free, but registration is required. Call 800-323-8622 and request class 5C31.
