Money Smart Week fair and expo set for April 21

The Money Smart Week DuPage Fair & Expo is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, from 9:30 to 2 p.m. in the new Homeland Security Education Center at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. The fair is offered free of charge for residents of DuPage and surrounding communities.

"This event offers practical, down-to-earth information on personal and consumer finance," said Joe Cassidy, dean, Continuing Education/Extended Learning at College of DuPage. "In addition, Money Smart Week provides a great opportunity for parents to introduce their children to concepts of saving, investing and planning for their future."

The event will kick-off with a keynote presentation by Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford, followed by a series of 14 free information sessions covering a wide range of topics, including:

Money Smart Kids Read; 13 Tips to Spend Smart and Save Smart; Making Kids Money Smart; Money Jeopardy for 5th to 8th Graders; Smart Investing: Allocating Your Investments and Rebalancing Your Portfolio; Understanding Your Credit and Your Credit Score; Understanding Today's Real Estate Market; Get Real: Financial Decisions in the Real World; Insider Tips for Paying and Securing Financial Aid for College; Organizing Your Financial and Vital Records: What to Keep and Why; Plan Track and Manage Your Money; Recovering from Financial Setbacks; Smart Women and Money. The fair will include displays and information from 25 exhibitors, including representatives from the State Treasurer's Office, local personal finance companies and banks, institutions of higher education, and other community service organizations such as the United Way of DuPage/West Cook and the YWCA.

"Voice of the Cubs" announcer Wayne Messmer will also be on hand for a live broadcast with Homelife Radio on WIND-560 AM, and an awards ceremony is scheduled to honor winners of the DuPage Money Smart Kid Essay Contest.

Refreshments and giveaways will also be available throughout the day.

Money Smart Week® (MSW) is a series of free classes and activities designed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago to help consumers better manage their personal finances. The DuPage/Chicago Money Smart Week will run April 21 to April 28, with more than 500 free educational events in Chicago and area locations and more than 1,000 programs throughout Illinois.
