Anderson Animal Shelter needs emergency funds

COVID-19 has already begun to affect Anderson Animal Shelter's ability to care for the homeless animals already in their care, as well as the animals in need in the days and months ahead.

Consider making an emergency gift to help ensure their ability to continue the shelter's mission of saving lives?

After the governor's stay at home order, the South Elgin-based shelter, with locations in Bloomingdale and North Aurora, had to cancel or suspend all of the in-person programming including adoptions, low-cost spay/neuter, vaccination and dental clinics and humane education programming. Because these programs have been suspended, so has the revenue they provide. Their adoption program alone provides nearly 50% of the operational income.

In spite of the fact that adoptions have been suspended, Anderson Animal Shelter has nearly 200 dogs and cats in care.

Most are in foster homes, and staff continue to provide them with veterinary care, medications, food and other supplies. In addition, Anderson Animal Shelter remains committed to paying the staff so that they do not suffer financially during this stressful time.

Anderson Animal Shelter is changing the format of the "Better Together Gala" scheduled for April 18 to an online event. Staff are working fast to recreate this event, but they do not expect the online event to be nearly as successful as the in-person events of the past. The Gala is the largest fundraiser and provides much-needed funding for the animal care supplies used every day.

As the fear of financial uncertainty grows, so does the potential decrease in revenue stream that funds Anderson Animal Shelter's ability to provide shelter, food and medical care to homeless animals.

The revenue goals for this year are not likely to be met and Anderson Animal Shelter's financial future is unclear. Your gift will provide emergency funding to ensure their ability to carry out their mission.

Just recently, staff got a call from an individual in the community. Her dog, Max, was desperately in need of emergency surgery that she could not afford. Our veterinarian, Dr. Samantha Stephenson and her team raced to the shelter to perform this complicated surgery, and saved Max's life! Without your support, Anderson Animal Shelter would not be able to provide these types of services to the community, saving lives and keeping families together.

We are all walking an uncertain path. The COVID-19 crisis is unprecedented and the financial effects will be long-lasting.

As of April 3, over 130 people made $6,385 of donations taking toward the $20,000 goal.
