Briefs: Residents sue over raid

A Bolingbrook couple filed suit against the DEA Friday, alleging the anti-drug agency mistakenly raided their home instead of a house next door. Albert and Debra White claim in their lawsuit that agents with guns drawn rushed into their home on Langford Drive around midnight Oct. 25, 2004. The agents shouted for the couple, their daughter and their 3-year-old grandson to get on the floor, the suit claims. "Plaintiffs learned near the end of their false imprisonment that the DEA's intended target of the raid was actually (next door)," the suit said. It was not clear why it took nearly three years to file the suit, and neither the Whites' lawyer nor a DEA representative could be reached late Friday afternoon. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

Aurora men arrested

Two Aurora men were arrested early Friday after an attempted armed robbery in a Winfield parking lot. Luis A. Acevedo, 26, and Ruben A. Ramos Jr., 27, have each been charged with one felony count of attempted armed robbery. They were being held Friday at the DuPage County jail. Winfield police said a man with a handgun came up to a parked vehicle in a strip mall lot at County Farm and Geneva roads and demanded the motorist to get out. The motorist put his car in reverse, attempting to escape, police said, when the offender broke the driver's-side window with the handgun. When the offender fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV, the victim called police and attempted to follow the vehicle. Winfield police soon spotted the vehicle driving south on Winfield Road and stopped it near Roosevelt Road with the help of Warrenville police, authorities said. Police retrieved a black automatic handgun during the stop.

Torture suspect cuts deal

A McHenry County man linked to the beating and torture of a suspected thief at a Cary home agreed Friday to testify against his three co-defendants in exchange for a plea deal that keeps him out of prison. Nicholas Sweeney, 24, of Woodstock admitted guilt to a charge of mob action stemming from the May 22 incident in which police say he and three other men lured an 18-year-old Lakewood man to a residence, struck him with a baseball bat, burned him with a hot knife and then locked him in a dog cage. Under the plea bargain, Sweeney was sentenced to six months in the McHenry County jail and two years' probation. Authorities say Sweeney and his friends targeted the victim because they believed he had stolen several items, including a bag of tools, a scale and a small amount of cash, from the Cary home of co-defendant Andrew C. Shedivy. Sweeney's co-defendants -- Shedivy, 21, of Cary; Patrick R. Rehayem, 19, of Fox River Grove; and Miko L. Gougis, 19, of Chicago -- all remain in custody at the county jail awaiting trial on armed robbery, unlawful restraint and mob action charges. Shedivy also faces several felony drug charges.
