Kane County Treasurer's Office gets help processing property tax prepayments

Staff from the Office of Kane County Clerk John A. Cunningham joined the Kane County Treasurer's Office this week to help process the unprecedented amount of Kane County taxpayers who have flooded the Treasurer's Office to prepay their 2017 (payable 2018) property taxes.

According to County Treasurer David Rickert, about two to three dozen residents come to the Treasurer's Office each December to prepay property tax bills that will not be due until the following June and September. However, this year, hundreds of people have been coming daily to make prepayments.

After learning that the lines of taxpayers were overwhelming staff at the Treasurer's Office, Cunningham sent four employees from the Clerk's Office to help Rickert's staff process all the payments. The Clerk's Office employees will be assisting the Treasurer's Office all week.

Cunningham said, "I was happy that staff from the Clerk's Office could lend a hand, or in this case, a few hands to help the Treasurer. We had an opportunity to save money for taxpayers and still provide superior service to them. I believe that the residents of Kane County benefit when all their elected officials work together as a team. I look forward to doing what I can to accomplish that goal."

More information about the prepayment of property taxes can be found at www.kanecountytreasurer.org.

The federal tax legislation signed into law last week makes some changes that might affect some itemized deductions, including payment of local property taxes. Neither the Clerk's Office nor Treasurer's Office staff are authorized to provide legal advice regarding the tax legislation or how it might affect individuals, and questions should be directed to a tax professional or attorney.

While current and future payments of property tax bills are handled by the Treasurer, the Clerk's Office accepts payment of delinquent taxes.

The Kane County Clerk's Office handles several different aspects regarding property taxes, including property tax extension for local governments; past tax searches; delinquent tax redemption; and annexations, disconnections, dissolutions and organization of taxing districts. The system implemented by the Clerk's Office to calculate tax extensions has saved taxpayer dollars by reducing the time to process these functions and increase efficiency.
