Tom Cullerton Disgusted with Independent Maps Decision

VILLA PARK, IL-- Senator Tom Cullerton expressed disgust at the Illinois Supreme Court's decision to block the Independent Maps Initiative from the November ballot. Cullerton also vowed to do his part to get the initiative on the ballot during the upcoming veto session in Springfield.

"As I have said before, I believe that voters should choose their legislators, not the other way around," Senator Tom Cullerton said. "I have already expressed my support for this reform measure by voting for the state senate's version of the independent map amendment last session. I will do everything in my power to get this referendum on the ballot during the veto session because I want to give voters the opportunity to reclaim their voice in the democratic process on November 8th."

The Illinois Supreme Court struck the Independent Maps Initiative's referendum from the general election ballot on August 25th. If the referendum is approved, it will change the way that the state's electoral map is drawn every ten years to make it more transparent and less partisan. Currently, powerful legislative insiders hold all of the power in remapping, allowing them to draw districts to maintain power and clout.

"I encourage the Independent Maps Initiative to pursue a rehearing and they will have my full support in doing so. I will also be doing my part by working with my colleagues in the legislature to make sure that this initiative gets on the ballot," Cullerton concluded.
