Big bounce-back for Buford, Stevenson

Taylor Buford scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Stevenson’s girls basketball team picked up its second victory in the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic, 42-24 over Rockton Hononegah on Saturday.

Jessica Burke added 9 points for Stevenson (9-5, 2-1 tourney).

“It was a big bounceback win after a tough loss (Friday, 69-41 to Prospect),” Patriots coach Tom Dineen said. “The girls played very well, especially defensively.”

Stevenson will play Barrington at 5 p.m. Monday in its tourney finale.

St. Edward 51, Antioch 50: At Lisle, the Sequoits suffered their first tournament loss after two wins, despite 31 points from Paige Gallimore.

The senior guard also had 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. Gallimore’s play sparked Antioch (12-4, 2-1) in the second half, allowing the Sequoits to overcome a 15-point halftime deficit and take the lead in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Several turnovers and missed layups down the stretch resulted in the loss for Antioch.

Sequoits coach Tim Borries said sophomore Kelly Johnson played “excellent defense” in the second half.

Grant 62, Highland Park 53: At Mundelein, Kaylie Kanzler’s 23 points led the Bulldogs in their tournament finale.

Jasmine Sangster added 17 points and Taylor Drake had 10 for Grant (5-9, 1-3).

Lake Zurich 51, Lake Forest 42: At Mundelein, the Bears were led by Elly Daleske’s 14 points and Kaylee Grant’s 13.

Lake Zurich (5-9) finished 2-2 in the tournament.

Niles West 42, Libertyville 41: At Mundelein, the Wildcats dropped their third game in a row.

Mary Wilterdink scored 12 points for Libertyville (6-9, 1-3).

Conant 43, Vernon Hills 35: At Mundelein, in the battle of the Cougars, Vernon Hills lost its second game in a row.

Sydney Smith (10 points) was the only player in double figures for Vernon Hills (11-5, 2-2), which settled for fourth place. Monica Bahlmann had 5 points and 8 rebounds.
