St. Edward sets Hall of Fame induction
St. Edward High School will induct a football team and a longtime supporter of the school’s athletic department into its Hall of Fame on Friday.
The 1978 Green Wave football team will be inducted. The Wave went 8-1 under coach Tim McVey that season and tied for the West Suburban Catholic Conference championship.
That St. Edward team played under the lights at Spain Filed in Dundee and had 4 shutouts.
The Green Wave led the WSCC in scoring with 267 points and gave up just 69/
Mark Bauer, Chris Dopke, Dan McMahon, George Marlin, Kent Morton, John Schroeder and Paul Wisdom were all named to the WSCC all-conference team.
With only five classes of football, many 8-1 teams were left out of the playoffs in the 1970s and St. Edward was not extended a postseason invitation in 1978.
The Hall of Fame will also induct Frank Jemsek, a 1959 St. Edward graduate who remained loyal to the school’s academic and athletic programs over the years.
Jemsek is president of his family corporation, which operates St. Andrews Golf Course in West Chicago, Cog Hill in Lemont, Pine Meadows in Mundelein and Summer Grove in Newton, Ga. Twelve high schools use Jemsek courses at no charge as their home sites for practices and matches.
Friday’s festivities will be held at Elgin Country Club. For more information, call (847) 741-7536, ext. 104. Tickets can be purchased at the school, 335 Locust Street, Elgin.
