Kukec shoots Maine West to victory

Maine West 59, North Shore Country Day 40: Tom Kukec canned six 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 22 points to help the Warriors get off to a winning start in tournament play hosted by Maine West. Allante Bates (10 points) also scored in double figures for Maine West, which led 28-23 at the half but took command in the third quarter by outscoring its opposition 20-8.

Jamie Swimmer led North Shore with 14 points.

Palatine 57, Deerfield 53: The Pirates started their own tournament with a victory.

Greg Grana and Chris Macahon both scored 13 points, and Josh Baldus and Andy Macahon had 9 apiece.

Palatine outscored Deerfield 25-14 in the third quarter to take control, then weathered a 24-15 scoring advantage to Deerfield in the fourth quarter.

In the other game at Palatine, Jared Brownridge canned six 3-pointers as Waubonsie Valley rolled past Noble Street 99-21.

St. Viator 82, Walther Lutheran 48: Pat Martin had a team-high 18 points and Ore Arogundade scored 17 to help tournament host St. Viator to a decisive first-round victory. Jon Fuqua led Walther Lutheran with a game-best 20 points.

Hoffman Estates 62, McHenry 52: Joe Biko scored a team-high 16 points and Iziah Robinson had 14 to help Hoffman Estates to a season-opening win in tournament play at Crystal Lake Central.

The Hawks played to a 21-10 advantage after the first quarter and were able to protect the lead the rest of the way. Hoffman Estates led by as many as 17 in the third quarter.

At Fenton: Elk Grove got a team-best 15 points from Austin Amann but came up short against Lake Park 46-44 in first-round tournament action, while Fremd cruised past Hubbard 62-41.
