McElroy, St. Viator nearly perfect

Tim McElroy was nearly perfect — and so were his teammates with the bats Wednesday.

McElroy threw a no-hitter and issued only 1 walk as the third-seeded Lions pounded out 25 hits as they rolled past No. 14 CICS-Northtown 20-0 in 5 innings in the Deerfield Class 3A baseball regional.

McElroy had 12 strikeouts and threw 47 of his 71 pitches for strikes as the Lions (20-16) advanced to Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional final against the winner of today’s 4:30 p.m. semifinal between No. 6 Lake Forest and No. 10 Deerfield. The only walk by McElroy came with two outs in the third.

Five Viator players had 2 RBI — Andrew Ferrante went 3-for-3, Chris Myjak homered and doubled, Cosimo Cannella had 2 doubles and Adam Naliwajko and Joe Ferrante had 2 hits. Kevin Patzke also went 3-for-3 and Ryan McCollum and Jake Soprych had 2 hits apiece.

Glenbrook North 10, Buffalo Grove 1: Six errors damaged the upset hopes of No. 15 Buffalo Grove (15-22) as it lost to No. 2 Glenbrook North in the Stevenson regional semifinal. Jake Fanella and Alex Fritz each went 2-for-3 with doubles and Jimmy Barton had a two-out RBI single in the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-1.
