CLC series of events celebrates Black History Month

To celebrate Black History Month, the College of Lake County invites the community to participate in a series of events taking place at the Grayslake Campus, unless otherwise noted:

• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, Room C106: Myths and Facts of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The speaker is Ed Smith-Lewis of the United Negro College Fund.

• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, A Court: Black Love Day, the cultural and spiritual alternative to the commercial Valentine's Day. Kimberla Lawson Roby, a New York Times best-selling author of the Rev. Curtis Black series, will explain her path to becoming a published writer.

• 2:30-4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, Room C106: Kick-Back Thursday. Enjoy light refreshments, socialize and have fun playing black history trivia and other board games.

• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, Feb. 17, Student Street: Sweets 4 the Soul. Enjoy cakes, $5 each, provided by Nothing Bundt Cakes.

• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, Student Street. Black Expo. Mingle with African-American professionals and business owners, including Dorothy Gautreaus Sisnett, owner of Nothing Bundt Cakes in Vernon Hills; Robert Collins, owner and founder of Youthage Culinary Program Inc.; and Wygenia Brisco, retired after serving as associate director of clinical research at AbbVie.

• Noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, Southlake Campus, 1120 S. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills: Cultural Connect. Students from CLC's Black Student Union mingle with BSU students from Vernon Hills and Libertyville high schools.

• 7-11 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, Student Commons: Disco Party. Kick up your heels to the best disco sounds of the '70s, and enjoy snacks made by CLC's Culinary Club.

• 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, Genesee Theatre, 203 N. Genesee St., Waukegan: 36th Annual Salute to Gospel Concert. Presented by CLC's Lakeshore Campus, this year's event features Bishop Hezekiah Walker, a multi-Grammy Award winner and newly inducted Gospel Music Hall of Famer. He will perform along with the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir, with special guests the CLC Gospel Choir, directed by Matthew Hunter.
