College of DuPage presents 'Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.' March 21

To mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., College of DuPage will present a lecture at noon Wednesday, March 21, featuring retired COD administrator Ernie Gibson, Ph.D., who worked with Dr. King to plan the Montgomery and Birmingham campaigns, the Selma March, and the March on Washington.

"Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: His Legacy Continues" will take place in the Jack H. Turner Conference Center, located in the Student Resource Center, Room 2000, on the Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd.

The event is free and open to the public.

Gibson and Sam Mitrani, Ph.D., associate professor of history at College of DuPage, will discuss the life and untimely death of Dr. King, who was fatally shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn., on April 4, 1968.

Gibson graduated from Tuskegee University and began his career as an instructor at his alma mater. He went on to serve as director of the student union and associate director for student life at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff. In 1966, Gibson was the first African-American hired by the newly chartered College of DuPage, serving first as director of campus life and retiring as executive director of business services in 1994. The COD cafeteria is named in his honor.
