COD Offers New Learning Community Classes for Spring 2018
College of DuPage will offer several new classes this spring through its Learning Communities program.
Learning communities are unique, innovative learning experiences that typically involve students enrolling as a cohort in two or more courses connected by a common theme. Learning communities for the Spring 2018 term include the following:
Aligning Theory and Practice: Honors Engineering Physics and Statics: This Honors Engineering/Physics learning community will combine the study of physics and statics: topics that are traditionally covered separately through coordinated lectures. Students will complete an independent engineering project and a number of labs geared toward statics as well as seminar-style special relativity. English Language Community: Students from a variety of countries and cultures around the world work together to improve their English reading and writing skills while learning about global cultures from each other. Frontier Conflict: Veterans' Perspectives: Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities "Dialogues on the Experience of War" program, this team-taught course will include a variety of historical and literary texts and will focus on two 20 year-plus conflict periods under the theme of "securing the frontier." Gods and War: Politics and World Religions: Exploring the intersection between religion and politics, students learn how religious beliefs and practices can help explain conflict and cooperation between countries, groups and individuals. In addition, a discussion of the interwoven history of religions and nations helps explain the current issues facing an increasingly globalized world. Human Resource Management Certificate: This learning community offers students who have completed the Human Resource Management course the opportunity to concurrently complete the three advanced courses that are requirements for earning the Human Resource Management certificate. Planetary Ethics: This seminar combines Environmental Biology with Environmental Ethics to explore how nature works, how things are interconnected, and how theories and principles of ethics are applied to major areas of environmental concern. Both classes satisfy general education requirements and Environmental Biology satisfies the lab science requirement. Research as Narrative: This learning community examines the fundamental role of research and rhetoric within the world of knowledge creation, while exploring academic discourse, bias, credibility, objectivity and community writing in the digital world. Victims, Villains and Heroes: This learning community will uses its theme to explore short stories and develop college success skills for students at the Illinois Youth Center in Warrenville. Students will learn methods for analyzing literature as well as study skills via the course readings.
