Work to begin on new Campus Maintenance Center

College of DuPage will begin construction this year on its new Campus Maintenance Center, which will be located on the southwest corner of its Glen Ellyn campus.

The 35,789 square-foot facility will provide much-needed space for the College's Facilities and Operations departments, which are currently housed in Building L – originally constructed in the early 1970s as a temporary structure – and the Berg Instructional Center.

“Building L was never meant to be used in this capacity, and it has not aged well,” said David Giuffre, senior project manager at College of DuPage. “Now we have an opportunity to construct a facility that will provide dedicated space designed for what the College needs.”

Features of the building include housing for 17 small and 11 large vehicles, as well as spaces for vehicle maintenance; workshops and storage for Buildings and Grounds crews, carpenters and engineers; a signage shop; custodial space; and employee offices and a conference room.

The Campus Maintenance Center will be located on the far southwest corner of the Glen Ellyn campus, just west of the College 6 parking lot (see campus map). Giuffre said the exterior of the one-story building will provide a unique colored pre-cast panel system and utilize a glass curtainwall in the offices for energy efficiency and daylight harvesting.

“Building L was meant to last only 20 years, so it has more than served its useful purpose,” Giuffre said. “With the ongoing transformation of the College of DuPage campus, we need a modern Campus Maintenance Center that will allow us to keep our facilities in top operational condition.”

Work is scheduled to start in late summer 2012 and will be completed in July 2013. The project will cost $8.5 million and is funded by the $168 million referendum that voters of District 502 passed in November 2010. Other projects beginning this year include the renovation of the McAninch Arts Center, Physical Education Center, Student Resource Center and Seaton Computing Center.
