St. Raphael Catholic Church Rescues Senior From Hunger

St. Raphael Catholic Church recently donated $800 to support a senior citizen living in poverty through the Humanitarian Service Project (HSP). The church's donation will provide fresh, nourishing fruits and vegetables, frozen meat, non-perishable food, and other food for a senior citizen for one year.

The 120 impoverished seniors in HSP's Senior Citizen Project receive monthly deliveries of 90 lbs. of groceries, which also include personal care items and paper products. The seniors also receive a monthly “Secret Pal” gift, a Meal of the Month provided by an HSP volunteer, gifts at Christmas time, and much needed household items on their “wishlist.”

St. Raphael Catholic Church sets aside 5% of its Sunday collections to donate to help the community. The church chooses local organizations in which parishioners already have established relationships with. St. Raphael's Catholic Church has been helping senior citizens in HSP's program since 1993. In addition, St. Raphael supports a total of 25 nonprofit organizations, including People's Resource Center, Loaves and Fishes, and Samaritan Counseling.

About The Humanitarian Service Project

HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,600 children received gifts and 100 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides a monthly food delivery and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 700 children. Feed the Kids provides low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
