COD Summer Repertory Theatre presents 'Rapunzel's Journey,' 'Sleeping Beauty'

The McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn, presents two summer repertory theater productions this June and July in the MAC and area libraries.

The summer repertory schedule includes “Rapunzel's Journey,” an improvisational show staged at the MAC and community locations between June 17 and July 11, and Michele L. Vacca's adaptation of “Sleeping Beauty,” staged June 24 to July 10 at the MAC. Shows are directed by Connie Canaday Howard and Amelia Barrett, respectively.

Scripted through improvisation and interweaving the characters from the Brothers' Grimm original tale, among other versions, “Rapunzel's Journey” highlights the need for courage when we feel lost, the resilience that we can find in both ourselves and others, the challenge of discerning who to trust, and, with all that, the hope that finally we will find our way.

Adapted from the classic Charles Perrault romance, “Sleeping Beauty” chronicles the King and Queen of Pharoffland's grief at remaining childless. Their despair is so pervasive that the entire kingdom is sick and in bed. Three good fairies, Rose Petal, Moon Beam and Twinkletoes use their powers to bring the little princess, Rosalind, into the world. Belladonna, furious at their lack of attention, bestows a curse on the princess. But the three good fairies are able to lighten her curse and perhaps save both the princess and the kingdom from grief, with 100 years of sleep. Only bravery, altruism and true love can rescue them all.

Performances of “Sleeping Beauty” are at 7 p.m. Fridays, July 1 and 8; Saturdays, June 25 and July 2 and 9; and Sundays, June 26 and July 3 and 10. Performances of “Rapunzel's Journey” are 5 p.m. Saturdays, June 25 and July 2 and 9; and Sundays, June 26 and July 3 and 10. All take place in the MAC Studio Theatre.

Several performances also are scheduled at community locations. Additional performances are scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, at the Winfield Public Library; 7 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at the Wheaton Public Library (outdoor performance); 7 p.m. Friday, June 24, at the Lombard Public Library; 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 28, at the Indian Boundary YMCA; 2 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at the Glen Ellyn Public Library; and 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, at the Lisle Public Library.
