Fox Valley Astronomical Society to host star gazing party Sept. 22

The Fox Valley Astronomical Society will host a Star Gazing Party from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22.

There will be a 30-minute presentation in the Orientation Barn at Peck Farm Park, 4038 Kaneville Road in Geneva.

Participants will then head outside to discover the stars, sky, and planets with real telescopes.

All ages are welcome. Dress for the weather. In the event of inclement weather or heavy cloud cover, the presentation will still be held but the star-gazing will be cancelled. For more information, visit fvasil.org or call (331) 442-4799.

The club consists of astronomy enthusiasts with varying skill sets ranging from novice to expert. Interests range from binocular viewing and visual observing to astrophotography. The club has a diverse base of members from the Fox Valley area including Batavia, Elburn, Geneva, St. Charles and the surrounding communities. The night sky is filled with many treasures including our planets, star clusters, nebulas, and numerous constellations. There has never been a better time to explore the delectable sites of our universe. Why not get started today by attending one of our club meetings or a public star party?

Star Parties are free sponsored event by the Astronomy Club where they educate and introduce the public to the night sky. They start by providing guests with an optional presentation on an astronomy topic. The presentation usually lasts for about 30 minutes, then we go outside to observe the night sky (weather permitting).

Club members are eager to set up their telescopes in the parking lot at Peck Farm Park. They have telescopes of all different types and brands. They will point the scopes at prominent celestial objects such as the Moon, planets such as Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Venus, Star Clusters such as Pleiades, constellations such as Orion, Taurus, Gemini and others depending on viewing conditions and the time of year.

If you have never seen any of these objects through the eyepiece of the telescope or if you have already been doing some observing on your own, a star party is a great way to see some of these objects, learn more about the universe, and ask any questions. It is a great way to spend some time with friends and family on a Saturday night, so why not stop by the Star Gazing Party.

The club is affiliated with the Internaltional Dark Sky Association, and Night Sky Network.
