National Work Zone Memorial to commemorate Kane County employee

On Tuesday, June 20, join a ceremony and viewing of the National Work Zone Memorial Wall at 8:30 a.m. at the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave. in Geneva.

The wall will be available for viewing from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 20-23.

Unveiled in April 2002, the National Work Zone Memorial program, with the theme, "Respect and Remembrance: Reflections of Life on the Road," is a living tribute to the memory of lives lost in work zones.

The memorial travels to communities cross-country, year-round to raise public awareness of the need to respect and stay safe in America's roadway work zones.

In May 2016, Steve Chidester, an employee with the Kane County Division of Transporation, was struck and killed by a pickup while working on a two-man crew filling potholes on Harter Road in Blackberry Township.

After having his name added to the memorial wall, friends and family wanted to bring it here as a way to honor the Cortland man's memory and to bring awareness to the dangers that exist for highway workers every day that they set foot in a work zone.
