Holiday hours set for electronic recycling drop-offs

The Kane County Electronics Recycling Drop-offs are open Monday through Friday every week, except for a couple upcoming closures for the holidays.

Note that all three locations will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and two days after, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 24-25. They will also be closed for Boxing Day, the Monday after Christmas, Dec. 26.

The locations include:

• Batavia: Old site for Kane County jail, 517 Fabyan Parkway, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays;

• South Elgin: old site for South Elgin public works, 735 Martin Drive, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays;

• West Dundee: West Dundee Public Works, 900 Angle Tarn, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. (Note that these hours are an hour earlier than other sites).

There is a cost for TVs and monitors. The fee that you pay for TVs and computer monitors - both tube and flat screen - goes directly to the county's contracted electronics recycler, eWorks, a nonprofit whose main mission is to employ developmentally disabled individuals. TVs and monitors cost $25 (under 21 inches) or $35 (21 inches and over).

Pay at site with cash or card only or pay online in advance at countyofkane.org/Recycling.

Everything else is free to drop-off.

The great news is that all other acceptable electronic items can be dropped off for free. Remember, they will accept strands of holiday lights. For the full list of items that can be recycled, visit www.countyofkane.org/Recycling/pages/electronics.aspx.

The list includes: cable and satellite receivers, cables and cords, cellphones/PDAs, circuit boards, computers (CPUs, laptops, tablet PCs, computer batteries), digital converter boxes, digital recorders, DVD players, fax machines, hard drives, keyboards, mice, phones, portable digital music players, printers, scanners, small scale servers, VCRs and video game consoles.

The next Kane County Recycles event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 14, at 540 S. Randall Road in St. Charles. This event will be for electronics and books only.
