Golf, services highlight Congregation Or Shalom events

August may be thought of as the dog days of summer, but activities do not stop at Congregation Or Shalom.

On Thursday, Aug. 27, golfers and nongolfers alike can enjoy the temple's fourth annual golf outing at White Deer Run Golf Course in Vernon Hills, 250 W. Greggs Parkway. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch and a shotgun start at noon. Dinner begins at 5 p.m., raffles, prizes and a silent auction are all part of the fun.

Or Shalom is committed to making a difference in the lives of all families, including those experiencing economic hardship, domestic violence and hunger.

The congregation works with two local school districts and provides low income children with weekend and holiday meals, as well as partners with Lake and Cook County food pantries and shelters, donating time, food and supplies.

A portion of the proceeds from this fundraiser will help the congregation support its community partners. For more information or to register, call (847) 362-1948 or email orshalom@orshalomlc.org.

Of course, the High Holidays are right around the corner, starting with a S'lichot service at 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5. "S'lichot" is a Hebrew word meaning "forgiveness," and refers to the special penitential prayers recited by Jews throughout the High Holidays.

Or Shalom holds young children's, traditional and family services for both Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. The S'lichot, young children's, second day of Rosh Hashanah and afternoon healing/Yizkor/concluding services are open to the community. Nonmember tickets are available for purchase; contact the temple office for more information

Located at 21 Hawthorn Parkway in Vernon Hills, Congregation Or Shalom's mission is to meet the diverse spiritual, educational and cultural needs of its congregants and the local Jewish community and welcomes interfaith families in all facets of temple life.
