Needy seniors birthdays not forgotten

The DuPage/ Kane County Chapter of Birthday Cakes 4 Free partnered with The Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) of DuPage County beginning in February of 2012, to provide birthday cakes for needy seniors that are supported by HSP. Birthday Cakes 4 Free has donated 82 cakes to the organization so far this year.

Rose Garcia, resident of Bloomingdale and founder of the DuPage/Kane County chapter, said she was inspired to start up Birthday Cakes 4 Free, due to the lack of support for seniors in need. While caring for her own aging father, Rose became motivated to help senior citizens without a strong support system. She wanted to help make those with limited resources, feel special on their birthday. After researching many potential charities, she was attracted to a partnership with HSP, because of the charity's project focused on serving needy seniors.

Birthday Cakes 4 Free was originally founded by Alicia Hammond out of California in 2010 with the mission statement, “Our mission is to help celebrate their special day and let them know they matter in hopes that this one act of kindness will last a lifetime.” They have gone on to opening chapters across the USA. Rose is looking to expand her chapter of Birthday Cakes 4 Free to reach out to more people in need in the community. Volunteers can assist the program by baking, purchasing, or picking up cakes or by donating.
