Elk Grove rolling again

Elk Grove went from reeling to rolling in one week.

The Grenadiers’ boys basketball team won their third game in six days Saturday night by holding on for a 55-52 nonconference victory over visiting Maine West.

The Grenadiers (10-13) entered this week on a five-game losing streak but convincingly beat Maine East on Monday and dramatically rallied to beat Prospect on Friday. There was no letdown Saturday as they took a 15-point lead into the fourth quarter to end a four-game winning streak by Maine West (12-10).

“It was an exciting weekend at home,” said Elk Grove coach Anthony Furman. “The whole week was a good week.”

And the Grenadiers won Saturday with point guard and leading scorer and rebounder Austin Amann sidelined with a sprained right ankle he suffered with three minutes left Friday. Furman said Amann wasn’t moving well enough in warm-ups to play but he expects him to be ready for Friday’s game at Hersey.

Kishan Patel (17 points, three 3-pointers), Zach Solorio (14 points), Anthony Jimenez (10 points, two 3s) and Jeff Miceli (8 points) took care of the offensive end. Devin Neill, Brian Kelly and Nick Parisi helped make up for Amann’s absence in other areas.

“They played together,” Furman said.

Maine West was coming off its own big comeback win over Niles North and got 26 points for the second straight game by senior Conor Hart. Kevin Garcia added 10 points and hit three 3s.

The Warriors cut the deficit to 46-39 in the first 4½ minutes of the fourth quarter but the Grens held on despite 8-for-20 free-throw shooting.

“We showed some composure and confidence,” Furman said.

Meadows 59, Niles West 45: Reserves Brian Sabal and Adam Pavlakis helped Rolling Meadows (14-7) overcome an 11-2 deficit in the nonconference home victory.

“They gave us a huge lift off the bench and did a nice job,” said Meadows coach Kevin Katovich. “Defensively it was probably our best effort of the year.”

The Mustangs got the game even at 11-11 after a quarter and led 30-23 at halftime one night after clinching a share of the Mid-Suburban East title. Brian Nelms had 15 points and 10 assists, Michael Rose had 14 points and Mike Dolan added 11 points.

Cory Dolins’ 13 points led Niles West (3-16).

Hoffman 51, Maine East 28: Austin Terry, Alex Bonds and Darion Brown led a balanced attack as Hoffman Estates (6-13) led 29-7 at halftime to break a five-game losing streak in Park Ridge.

“We played really good pressure defense and forced a lot of turnovers,” said Hoffman coach Luke Yanule. “We bounced back well from Conant (56-50 loss Friday).”

Fremd 48, Lane Tech 37: Garrett Peters scored 17 points as Fremd (14-9) led 17-8 after a quarter and 24-14 at halftime in the nonconference win in Palatine. Riley Glassman scored 12 points and Adam Gorecki added 8 points.

Conant 51, Deerfield 39: Conant (11-11) completed a perfect weekend with the nonconference road victory.
