Legislators lend hand at Catholic Charities supper

Six state legislators pitched in to serve nearly 100 hungry and homeless individuals at Catholic Charities Northwest Regional Office in Des Plaines on Tuesday, Aug. 30, two days before the start of national Hunger Action Month.

Rep. David Harris, Rep. Fred Crespo, Sen. Dan Kotowski, Rep. Elaine Nekritz, Sen. Matt Murphy and Rep. Tom Morrison also toured the office, which is a hub for many services, including a clothing room, food pantry, public benefits screening, housing assistance and counseling programs.

September is Hunger Action Month across the U.S. and Catholic Charities will hold a series of food drives and events to support its work to alleviate hunger in the Chicago area.

“We were honored to have this distinguished group at our site, helping out and learning firsthand about poverty in the Northwest suburbs,” said Mary Insprucker, Northwest Regional director. “We know that their experiences here will inform their work in Springfield.”

Catholic Charities hosts two suppers each week at the Northwest office, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Last year, the suppers fed 8,000 persons. Volunteers setup, serve and clean up after the supper, which is donated by the group in charge on a particular night, such as a parish, Scout troop, club or local business.
