Pippen paces Carmel volleyball victory

Taylor Pippen slammed 6 kills, served 2 aces and recorded 2 blocks to lead Carmel Catholic’s girls volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-23 win over Lake Zurich Tuesday night.

Jessie Wayland and Caitlin Barry added 4 kills apiece for the Corsairs (2-0), while Megan Mowery had three. Janelle Dewald and Mowery dished out 10 and 7 assists, respectively. Mowery also recorded 2 aces and 9 digs. Maura Zawaski led Carmel in digs with 10.

“Our seniors led the way tonight and stepped it up even before the first whistle,” Carmel coach David Pazely said. “We knew we were in for a fight against Lake Zurich, and we beat them for the first times in at least four years. This was a great test before our next game (at Lake Forest on Thursday).”

Libertyville d. Conant: Cindy Zhou had 18 assists and 2 aces, as the Wildcats won their season opener 25-13, 25-21.

Julia Smagatz hit 17 of 18 with 8 kills for Libertyville, while Eileen Knauff was 13-of-15 hitting with 7 kills. Kerry Risley chipped in 3 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces, and Kristen Webb added 13 digs for the Wildcats.

Grant d. Waukegan: Scottley Sandness served 14 of 14 with 6 aces, and Jamie Reiser was 15-of-16 serving with 4 kills, as host Grant captured a 25-16, 25-12 win.

Mallory Gizowski led Grant hitters with 4 kills on 10-of-10 hitting. Bethani Jacobsen posted 2 solo blocks, while Taylor Rossi and Reiser each had 6 assists.

Richmond-Burton d. Antioch: Jessica Ploss had 4 kills and 3 blocks for the Sequoits in their 21-25, 25-10, 25-12 loss.

Samantha Falco led Antioch (1-1) with 7 kills, and Marissa Grant lofted 10 assists and served 8 of 8 with 2 aces.

Warren d. Deerfield: The Blue Devils evened their record at 1-1 with a 25-17, 24-26, 25-21 win.

Warren got good defensive play from Savannah Slater with 17 digs, while Stephanie Karlovics was 17-of-19 hitting with 5 kills and 8 blocks. Libby Perrone contributed 8 digs, 15 assists (38-of-38 setting) and 5 kills. Jaimie Dickenson had a big night with 3 aces, 9 kills and 4 blocks.

Rachel Ziegler added 10 assists for Warren, and Paige Jesperson slammed 3 kills.

Lakes d. Zion-Benton: Emily Aigner pounded 10 kills, leading the Eagles to a 25-19, 25-23 win in their season opener.

Lakes received 5 kills apiece from Rachel Sieracke and Sarah Horner.
