Sept. 23-27: CLC's 50th Anniversary week includes time-capsule opening, community service projects

From the opening of a 1999 time capsule to community service opportunities, the College of Lake County will celebrate its 50th Anniversary Week Sept. 23-27 at the Grayslake, Lakeshore (Waukegan) and Southlake (Vernon Hills) Campuses. The year-long effort began with the May 18 commencement ceremony and continues through May 2020.

While the official 50th anniversary is Sept. 25, the celebration is designed to last far beyond one day in order to allow the community to experience the diverse offerings of the college. "The events appeal to diverse interests, and we hope they will help CLC thank the community for our 50-year partnership," said Anne O'Connell, CLC director of public relations and marketing.

Events for the Anniversary Week include:

•Monday-Thursday, Sept. 23-27: Community Service Projects. The college's 50th Anniversary Committee and the Student Government Association will organize students, faculty and staff on all three CLC campuses to participate in service projects for nonprofit and community organizations. Projects include packing spices and paper goods in the college's SHARE market serving economically disadvantaged students; conservation work at the Rollins Savanna of the Lake County Forest Preserves; and packing food at the nonprofit Feed My Starving Children in Libertyville.

•Tuesday, Sept. 24: Living Lab trail opening, 4 p.m., Café Willow on the Grayslake Campus. The footpath follows the existing campus paths and building hallways, with new signs added to explain environmental features such as solar panels and geothermal heating and cooling. Other signs highlight opportunities to explore the 10 dimensions of wellness. A reception follows at 5 p.m. in Café Willow.

•Wednesday, Sept. 25: Time Capsule Opening, 1 p.m., Student Commons, Grayslake Campus. See items included in a 1999 time capsule, and current students along with college trustees will add present-day objects and rebury the capsule. Additionally, at 6 p.m. in the Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art, there will be an opening reception for "50 for 50th: Latest Works by CLC Art Students from the Last 50 Years."
