New resource center for neurological conditions opens at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital
A new resource center at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield helps patients facing neurological illness navigate information about their condition.
The Douglas L. Johnson Neurosciences Resource Center is stocked with a library of books, pamphlets, videos and an iPad with access to relevant resources about neurological conditions.
Located in the Movement Disorders and Neurodegenerative Diseases Center in Suite 432 at Central DuPage Hospital, the resource center is the initiative of Michael Mercury, Ph.D., director of neuropsychology at Northwestern Medicine Regional Medical Group and co-director of the Neurodegenerative Diseases Center at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital.
Mercury specializes in memory and the cognitive aspects of dementia and movement disorders.
"The intention of this resource center is to help patients and their family members feel supported amid their neurological illness," says Mercury. "By providing a modest amount of resources, as well as guidance in using the internet to access targeted websites, patients can access the information they need."
In August 2017, Mercury was recognized as the Douglas L. Johnson Endowed Chair in Neuroscience. This endowment, which was made possible through many generous donations, celebrates the life and career of Douglas Johnson, M.D., a 21-year veteran and influential leader in the neurosciences program at Central DuPage Hospital.
The resource center is the first project to be completed as part of Mercury's three-year endowed position.
Mercury, social worker Debi Crystal and Advanced Practice Nurse Heather Fill, APN, NP, partnered with volunteer Nathan Schoenrade to catalog and label books, and to staff the resource center to help patients navigate the center's resources.
The resource center is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
