Sept. 12: CLC hosts immigrant rights advocate Enrique Morones, Ph.D.

Enrique Morones, Ph.D., an internationally acclaimed advocate for immigrant and migrant rights, will share his ideas for immigration reform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12 in Room C105 at the College of Lake County's Grayslake Campus. The address is 19351 W. Washington St.

Morones is founder of the nonprofit Border Angels, a San Diego-based nonprofit organization that advocates for human rights, humane immigration reform and social justice. Launched in 1986, the group focuses on Latino issues along the U.S.-Mexican border. Border Angels also emphasizes education and advocacy, including the dispelling of myths surrounding immigration in the U.S. The group's outreach efforts include distributing food and toiletries to migrant day laborers in the San Diego area and providing free bilingual immigration consulting to migrant families.

The first to gain dual U.S. and Mexican nationality in 1998, Morones led a caravan of activists and American citizens across the country in the first "Marcha Migrante" in 2006. The event has been held every year since to raise awareness of the plight of migrants while advocating for humane immigration reform.

Morones and Ricardo Griswold del Castillo, Ph.D., are co-authors of "The Power of One: The Story of Border Angels," published by San Diego State University Press.

In addition to founding Border Angels, Morones created the first Latino-focused marketing department for a professional sports team when he served as vice president of Latino and international marketing for the San Diego Padres from 1996 to 2001. A native of the city, he holds a bachelor's degree in international marketing from San Diego State University and a master's degree in executive leadership from the University of San Diego.
