College of DuPage Tobacco-Free Starting Aug. 6

The College of DuPage Board of Trustees adopted a Tobacco-Free Campus Policy during its April 19 regular meeting, which states that, effective Monday, Aug. 6, the use of tobacco and tobacco-related products will be prohibited on all College of DuPage premises and in all College-owned vehicles.

“Currently, one in four – or roughly 650 – colleges and universities in the country have tobacco-free policies,” said COD Board Chairman David Carlin. “This new policy sends a clear and powerful message that the College supports a healthy lifestyle and a clean, positive environment for learning, community events and cultural activities on our campus.”

Following a 10-year transformation of its Glen Ellyn campus, the Tobacco-Free Policy is a “natural next step” for the College, said COD President Dr. Robert L. Breuder.

“The new Tobacco-Free Policy ensures a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone,”

Dr. Breuder said. “While we are proud to be on-trend with a national movement toward tobacco-free public spaces, we do understand this transition may be difficult for some individuals and plan to assist them as much as possible.”

On Wednesday, April 25, College of DuPage will host a Tobacco-Free Health Resource Fair in its Student Services Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 5 to 7 p.m. The free event will provide tips for kicking the habit, guidelines for overall wellness and stress management, as well as information on health-based services available at the College and in the DuPage area. A similar event is planned for the fall, with other classes and support opportunities in the works.
