COD Hosts African American and Latino Parent Summit Sept. 29

The inaugural African American and Latino Parent Summit will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Resource Center, Room 2000, at College of DuPage.

The free summit will feature presenters Lourdes Ferrer, Ed.D., and Stephen Garlington, academic achievement consultants for the DuPage Regional Office of Education, which is hosting the event. They are also authors of the 2012 book, “Voices: African American and Hispanic Students' Perceptions Regarding the Academic Achievement Gap.”

Parents attending this summit will gain an awareness of the academic achievement gap that many African American and Latino students face. They will also learn about forces that deter students from achieving greater academic success, as well as their roles and responsibilities in helping children excel in school and college. A question and answer period will follow the presentations.

The sessions will be presented in both English and Spanish, with free lunch and entertainment included. Registration is required by all participants by Saturday, Sept. 15. Call Kelly at (630) 407-5773, email kkozerka@dupage.k12.il.us, or click here for more information.
