Advocate Condell lecture June 14 covers shoulder pain, treatment options

Just in time for summer yard work and softball leagues, Advocate Condell Medical Center is offering a free community health event on preventing and treating shoulder injuries.

A pair of lectures by board-certified orthopedic surgeons will address debilitating shoulder injuries, which can happen regardless of age or activity level. Whether you are suffering from shoulder pain caused by a torn rotator cuff, shoulder impingement or various forms of arthritis, you may benefit from recent technological advances in treatment.

The free lecture takes place at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, in Advocate Condell's Conference Center, 700 Garfield Ave., Libertyville. Participants will enjoy refreshments and giveaways, as well as access to information on Advocate Condell Medical Center's services. Registration is required by calling 800-323-8622. The registration code is 5N30.

Hany Elrashidy, MD, board certified in orthopedic surgery, will talk about shoulder injuries common to athletes. Elrashidy, a Shoulder and Sports Medicine specialist with Greenleaf Orthopaedics in Libertyville, has been reaching out to educate local physicians and the community on shoulder pain and sports injuries involving the shoulder and knee.

“The shoulder is a diverse and complex structure,” said Elrashidy. “Shoulder pain is a frequent cause of days lost from work and chronic pain. By working more closely together, primary care physicians, orthopedists and physical therapists can more effectively treat many of these conditions,” Elrashidy says.

Following Dr. Elrashidy's presentation, Marcus Talerico, MD, board certified in orthopedic surgery, will talk about the newest treatment for shoulder injuries, including reverse total shoulder replacements. Talerico, with Mid America Orthopaedics in Libertyville, specializes in the treating disorders of the hand and upper extremity.

“The shoulder is the key link to our hands, so having untreated shoulder issues can have far-reaching implications,” Talerico said. “Many people suffer from shoulder pain and loss of use. Modern technology has improved in the last several years and often this suffering is no longer necessary. Patients can benefit from these new non-surgical and surgical treatment options for many of the diseases and conditions which affect the shoulder joint.”
