St. Lawrence Episcopal Church visits Chinmaya Mission Chicago - Yamunotri

On January 29, 2017, high school students along with many parents from St. Lawrence Episcopal Church of Libertyville, IL visited Chinmaya Mission Chicago, Yamunotri in Grayslake, to learn about Hinduism. Chinmaya Mission high school students had prepared a comprehensive presentation re. key topics of Hinduism and frequently asked questions that they encounter at school and amongst non-Indian friends.

Questions ranged from "What is the caste system" to "What is Moksha?" and "Do you believe in Reincarnation?" Chinmaya students were very knowledgeable and were able to answer all the questions with confidence and poise. St. Lawrence students and parents were intrigued by the deep philosophical approach and all-inclusive nature of Hinduism, and asked many follow-up questions to clarify concepts that were presented.

The visitors also attended the concluding prayers at the Mission, where students were learning to chant Bhagavad Gita, chant daily prayers and end with Aarti. Each visitor participated in the Aarti to Lord Krishna and Radhaji Devi, as an offering of his/her devotion to the one God we all pray to.

The event ended with a casual reception with snacks and juice, where all could mingle and get to know each other.

Overall, all the participants felt that the similarities between the two faiths far outweighed the differences. The feeling of oneness and harmony was felt by all.
