CLC's six study-abroad programs in 2020 offer college credit, special topics
Interested in earning college credit while you learn a different culture, visit breathtaking scenery and make new friends? In Spring Semester 2020, the College of Lake County will offer six ventures led by CLC professors, and the registration deadline for several trips is Nov. 1.
The options include the following:
•China (entire Spring Semester): Study at Yunnan International University in Kunming, which has a warmer climate than most other Chinese cities. Explore the Stone Forest, Jade Dragon Snow Mountains, Black Dragon Pool and other historical sites and cultural attractions.
•China (March 18-29): Spend the 2020 spring break learning about sustainability and geologic features with trips to Shanghai, Beijing and the Great Wall. Besides courses in green buildings/sustainability and field geology, take part in service learning to help farmers install a solar-powered water filtration system.
•Costa Rica (May 15-31): Tour spectacular wildlife and volunteer in a public school. Learn about diversity in schools and society as well as how Costa Rican culture influences law.
•Greece/Turkey (May 16-31): Visit cultural, historic and religious icons in Athens (Acropolis, Parthenon, etc.) as well as Delphi and Thessaloniki. You'll also enjoy a cruise and sample the region's cultural and ethnic diversity.
•Japan: (May 16 - June 6): Immerse yourself in Japanese cultural traditions by visiting one of the oldest hot spring spas, medieval castles and historic temples-surrounded by exquisite landscapes. Also learn creative writing by studying contemporary Japanese literature.
•Ukraine (May 18 - June 25): Learn the geography of central Europe and western Ukraine. The itinerary includes five days in Kiev, the Ukrainian capital and the country's largest city, four weekend field trips and classroom instruction at Ternopil University. Live with a host family in Ternopil, visit and hike the Carpathian Mountains in Lviv, tour Kolomyya and visit various cultural world heritage sites.
The study-abroad opportunities have proved to be enriching for CLC students. "I really enjoyed the challenge of learning Chinese, and I'm proud of what I was able to learn," said Alyssa Stricker, an international relations major who participated in the spring 2019 semester abroad program in China. "I definitely want to keep studying now that I've started. And the food, culture and trips that we took were all really incredible."
Studying abroad and providing global education opportunities is the simplest form of international diplomacy, noted Jacob Cushing, director of CLC's Center for International Education. "These opportunities provided by CLC are one of the many ways the college ensures that our students receive a purposeful and focused education on their paths to being productive members in our global society," he said.
