Girls basketball: Week 2 MVPs
Batavia’s Liza Fruendt has been chosen as Daily Herald MVP for her basketball performances last week.
The Missouri State-bound senior scored 31 points to help the Bulldogs snap a losing streak to Geneva that had spanned six years.

Liza Fruendt, Batavia: It had been six years since Batavia defeated Geneva, but the Bulldogs got it done 59-51 last Friday thanks to 31 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists by this Missouri State-bound senior. Fruendt followed with 24 points against Elgin and 29 points against Larkin in two more Batavia wins.
Alexis Glasgow, Rolling Meadows: The Northwestern recruit scored a game and season-high 26 points in the Mustangs’ 71-69 victory over state power Fremd in Palatine. The senior guard tossed home a game-high seven 3-pointers, two of which she hit in the first two minutes of the second quarter when the Mustangs pulled in front 26-18.
Sydney Smith, Vernon Hills: With fellow Division-I recruit Lauren Webb sidelined with a foot injury, the Vermont-bound senior has needed to step up her scoring this season. She’s responded. Her 23 points and 9 rebounds led the Cougars to a 58-44 win over Antioch, stretching their North Suburban Prairie winning streak to 31 games. She’s averaging 23.5 points per game for the 7-1 Cougars.
Claire Speweik, Westminster Christian: The Warriors’ senior had quite a week in leading her team to three-straight wins. She scored a total of 38 points on 18 of 34 shooting, had 28 rebounds (including 21 against rival Harvest Christian) and 8 assists. She also led a Westminster Christian defensive effort with 7 steals that helped her team allow just 44 points in those three games as they moved their season record to 8-1.
Meghan Waldron, WW South: The 5-foot-9 senior guard scored 25 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, dished 3 assists and added 3 steals in the Tigers’ 58-45 victory against cross-town rival Wheaton North as the top-ranked Tigers opened the DuPage Valley Conference season with a victory.
