  • Barson raises the bar at Rolling Meadows Feb 25, 2015 8:58 PM
Jake Barson is the best swimmer Monika Chiappetta has coached in her 17 years on the job at Rolling Meadows. A state point-scorer last year in the 100-yard breaststroke, a two-time Mid-Suburban League champion in the same event and now, after a victory last weekend at Glenbrook North, a sectional champ as well. He’s a team record holder in two individual events and is also represented on the team record board on a pair of relays. As a team captain this year, Barson led Rolling Meadows to its first MSL divisional championship in 45 years. For all of that, what Chiappetta appreciates most about her standout senior has nothing whatsoever to do with his ability in the swimming pool.

How did the Mid-Suburban East’s top boys swimming teams stack up at the Glenbrook North sectional on Saturday afternoon? In historically strong fashion, that’s how. With winners in 5 of the 8 individual swimming events, those East teams showed they certainly belonged in a field led by meet champion New Trier (287 points) and Glenbrook North (181.5). Rolling Meadows added to its memorable season by finishing third with 157 points, 1 point better than Loyola, and breaking all kinds of new ground along the way. Rolling Meadows, Prospect, Hersey and Elk Grove each had event winners, and Wheeling advanced a pair of relays to next weekend's state meet.

With the No. 2-seeded and state-ranked Knights trailing No. 7 seed Rolling Meadows 27-26 and less than six minutes remaining, Grott fired home a 12-footer from the baseline to give Prospect a lead it would never relinquish in a hard-fought 38-32 victory. And by stepping up at the free throw line, the No. 7-seeded Mustangs were finally able to put away the stubborn No. 10 Pirates. • Gold-medal efforts at Barrington Feb 14, 2015 9:00 PM
The wide array of sports being contested at Barrington High School on Saturday almost gave the campus the feel you’d find at a Olympic-style winter sports festival. Wrestling over here, basketball over there — and down this hallway, the Mid-Suburban League boys swimming and diving championships. And in the pool, the host Broncos ended up celebrating a successful defense of their MSL team title, emerging on top in a finish that was much more tightly grouped than usual. • Solka helps Prairie Ridge co-op win at Lake Park Feb 12, 2015 11:39 PM
Prairie Ridge co-op junior Maddie Solka wasn’t even supposed to compete on Thursday night at the Lake Park girls gymnastics sectional. Solka, a Cary-Grove student, had injured her back in practice early in the week and was listed as doubtful for Thursday. But Solka ended up saving the day for the Wolves. Prairie Ridge was down to three gymnasts for the final event, floor exercise. Solka stepped in and gutted out a clutch performance in taking 10th place with a 9.3, propelling the Wolves to their fourth consecutive sectional title with 149.25 points in Roselle. Without Solka, Prairie Ridge would have finished with 139.93 points and missed the state cut. Instead the Wolves joined Geneva, Lyons Township, and Glenbrook South as automatic qualifiers.
