College of Lake County Music Department presents holiday concerts

The sounds of the season will be celebrated at three instrumental concerts presented by the College of Lake County Music department in December. The Jazz Combo will perform Dec. 10, the Wind Ensemble Holiday Concert will be Dec. 15 and the Concert Band will perform Dec. 18. The Holiday Choral Concert at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 15 has sold out.

The Jazz Combo, led by adjunct faculty member Tim Barclay, will give a free concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10 in room P-101 of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts. The combo consists of Paul Roupas, tenor saxophone; Neal Lukenbill, guitar; Jesse Herscher, piano; Adam Brown, bass; and Evan Keefe, drums. They will perform traditional jazz standards and more modern compositions, including two original student compositions written by combo members Neal Lukenbill and Adam Brown.

The Holiday Wind Ensemble Concert will be presented at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15 in the Mainstage Theater. Conducted by Dr. Michael Flack, the 49-member Wind Ensemble will perform crowd-pleasing favorites and holiday tunes, including “A Christmas Intrada” by Alfred Reed, “Christmas in the Round” arranged by Robert W. Smith, “Divertimento for Band, Op. 42” by Vincent Persichetti, “The Sussex Mummers' Christmas Carol” by Percy Grainger, “The Wonderful World of Disney” arranged by John Edmondson, “Greensleeves” arranged by Alfred Reed, “Finlandia, Op. 26 No. 7” by Jean Sibelius and “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson.

The Concert Band's fall semester concert will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18. The 60-member Concert Band, directed by John Mose, will perform a concert of holiday favorites and traditional band repertoire, including the following: “The Huntress” by Karl King, “Toccata Marziale” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, “I Vow to Thee My Country” by Gustav Holst with setting by Vaughn Williams, “Curtain Up! A Theater Overture for Winds” by Alfred Reed, “A Christmas Triptych” arranged by Cecil Bolton, “Westminster Carol (Angels We Have Heard on High)” by James L. Hosay and “A Fireside Christmas” arranged by Sammy Nestico.

The concerts (except the Jazz Combo) will be presented in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St. Tickets to the Wind Ensemble and Concert Band concerts are $6 for adults, $5 for CLC students/staff and teens and children under age 12 are free. The Box Office is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 90 minutes prior to each performance. To avoid long lines at the Box Office caused by last-minute sales, please purchase your tickets in advance or arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the performance.
