COD Hosts ‘Day of the Dead’ Excursion to Pilsen Oct. 27

College of DuPage will host a free outing in honor of the traditional Latin American “Day of the Dead” holiday on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood.

The event will begin with a walking tour of culturally relevant murals in the neighborhood, followed by a visit to the National Museum of Mexican Art for a guided tour of the “ofrendas” or altars made to honor and celebrate the memory of deceased loved ones. Participants will then visit an authentic Mexican restaurant for lunch followed by free time to explore the culturally rich Mexican-American community of Pilsen.

This excursion is the result of a first-time collaboration between the College’s Latin America Studies Committee, the “Casa de Amigos” student Spanish club and the Alpha Mu Gamma foreign language honor society.

Buses will depart at 8:30 a.m., and participants will meet in front of the College’s cafeteria in the Student Resource Center. To register, attendees must submit a $5 refundable deposit to Saraliz Jimenez in the Student Services Center, Room 2225, by Monday, Oct. 22. Participants are responsible for their own lunches and are encouraged to bring cash as many of the authentic Mexican restaurants in Pilsen do not accept credit or debit cards.
