Hersey turns away Grens’ upset bid

Mid-Suburban East power Hersey got a scare in Set 2 at Elk Grove but the Huskies recovered for a 25-20, 23-25, 25-13 triumph Tuesday in girls volleyball.

Anna Mullen-Muhr (12 kills) and Erica Hill (9) led the Huskies (7-2, 2-0) while teammates Abby Fesl had 33 assists and Taylor Schill 19 digs.

Diamond Boyd (9 kills, 17 digs), Emily Wary (7 kills) and Bridget Chaput (5 kills) led the Grens (3-6, 1-1), whose offense was set by Christine Juhas (12 assist) and Kerry Souder (12).

Fremd d. Conant: After a tight first set, visiting Fremd was able to pull away in the second set and post a 25-23, 25-14 victory in the MSL West.

Lane Hindenburg (7 kills), Nicole Obos (5) and Claire Bardy (5) led the Vikes attack set by Marilyn Lortz (17 assists).

Fremd improved to 7-2 and 2-0 while Conant stands at 2-7 and 0-2.

Palatine d. Hoffman Estates: Taylor Fricano and Val Soderstrom each put down 9 kills for host Palatine (7-1, 2-0) in a 25-17, 25-22 MSL West triumph.

Destinee Young and Becca Stoczynski each had 4 kills for the Hawks (3-7, 0-2).

Senior Cassie Chaplinsky and junior Hannah Bridier added 4 kills apiece for Palatine while teammates Alex Heidrich had 28 assists and Cayla Kendzior 10 digs.

Prospect d. Rolling Meadows: Visiting Prospect (1-3, 1-0) posted a 25-16, 25-22 victory as Amanda Cipek (6 kills) and Allie Skowron (5) led the Knights’ attack set by Maggie Haaning (9 assists) and Bree Geweniger (11 assists).

Grace Skorin (5 kills), Jenny Vliet (3 kills), Lauren Sokolowski (3) and Ashley Montanez (2) paced Meadows (4-6, 0-2).

Barrington d. Schaumburg: Lauren Shechtman (8 kills), Julia Thompson (5) and Christa Roney (4), who took their cues from junior setter Claire Waliczek (18 assists) helped lead host Barrington (3-2, 1-1) to a 25-17, 25-23 victory.

Kelly Koutnik and Kiana Lewis each had 7 kills for Schaumburg (4-4, 1-1) as teammate Marisa Christy compiled 13 assists.

Harper d. Joliet: Harper (8-1, 2-0) was led by Veronica Drabowksi’s 12 kills in a 25-17, 25-21, 25-13 victory.

Sarah House (6 kills), Erinn Hellweg (5) and Clara Moravec (4) were other top attackers for the Hawks, whose offense was set by Kelly Sommers (34) assists.

Sommers had a double-double with 15 digs.
