HSP calling volunteers to help fight hunger
The Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) of Carol Stream is forming a team of volunteers to join their mission of ending suffering and malnutrition by sorting food on Wednesday mornings. Every month, 5.4 tons of food is delivered by HSP to the 120 hungry senior citizens served by the Senior Citizen Project. In order to diminish the burden hunger places on these needy seniors, they are calling out to members of the community interested in joining the fight against local hunger.
Karole Kettering, founder and executive director of HSP, said that throughout the non-profit's 33 year history, volunteers have been instrumental in helping HSP feed and alleviate the pain of poverty for the needy within the community. She explained, “The solution to the problems that hunger and poverty bring to our community must come from within the community itself. Since being founded in 1979, HSP has been blessed to serve as a conduit to connect those in need with those in the community willing to give a little of themselves to help fight hunger.”
HSP's Senior Citizen Project and Feed the Kids Project are designed to alleviate hunger for needy senior citizens and families, respectively, in DuPage and Kane Counties. The programs provide a large variety of groceries including fresh, juicy fruits and green, leafy vegetables, bread, frozen meats, and non-perishable food to provide these needy seniors and families with the nutrition they, otherwise, could not afford. Volunteers are heavily involved in all of these programs through numerous tasks which include sorting food, loading vehicles on delivery and distribution days, and delivering to seniors.

About The Humanitarian Service Project
HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane Counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,600 children received gifts and 100 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides monthly food deliveries of 90 pounds including fresh produce, frozen meats, non-perishables, paper products and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 900 children. Feed the Kids program provides 100 low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
